Software Architect
Interlune is a space resources company based in Seattle, WA. We will provide resources from space to power a clean and sustainable economy on Earth and in space.
We are looking for a Doer who wants to join our early-stage team and accelerate humanity’s progress toward an off-world future. Our engineering team combines expert knowledge of geological sciences, mechanical engineering, robotics, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to build the infrastructure that will create an in-space economy. To join our small team, you must be agile, willing to learn, and able to take on multiple roles as needed.
This role will conceptualize the high-level design and drive to implement the software architecture, working with internal teams and external partners.
Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system development. Familiarity with and prior experience in the space industry is particularly valuable.
Responsibilities:
- Design the architecture for remote operations with a focus on autonomy, reliability, and fault tolerance. This includes leading the software development effort of embedded software.
- Lead the development of flight and ground software.
- Developing simulation tools and utilizing development hardware to validate design concepts, characterize system performance and quantify constraints.
- Demonstrate complete end-to-end product ownership; leading the build, testing and activation of the systems designed.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
- 5+ years’ experience in mission-critical spacecraft avionics systems development (both hardware and software), including fault detection, isolation and recovery (FDIR) architecture, defining validation and verification strategies, supporting integrating avionics components, and setting up and performing avionics tests.
- Familiarity with implementing and tailoring software development assurance standards , including selection of appropriate target hardware.
- Expertise in programming languages such as C++, Python, or Rust.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded systems.
- Experience with autonomy software for robotics or spacecraft.
- Capable of writing software for test automation, data review, and design analysis.
- A system thinker that can define and guide a platform definition and design.
- Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
- Ability to work both individually and collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
- Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
- M.S. or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
- Basic knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and how to apply this knowledge to software designs targeting space applications.
- Experience designing fully autonomous operations.
- Familiarity with design-for-manufacture and design-for-cost.
- Project management experience in the aerospace, industrial, or power generation industry.
- Experience working on an in-space mission, preferably on a planetary mission with surface operations

Compensation range for on site WA state employees is:
Target Levels:
Level 4 Range: $147,700 - $221,600
We will consider candidates with a wide variety of experience levels for this position. Your actual level and base salary will be decided based on your specific experience and skill level.
