Mechanical Engineer

Interlune is a space resources company based in Seattle, WA. We will provide resources from space to power a clean and sustainable economy on Earth and in space.

Our engineering team combines expert knowledge of geological sciences, mechanical engineering, robotics, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to build the infrastructure that will create an in-space economy. To join our small team, you must be agile, willing to learn, and able to take on multiple roles as needed.

This role will report to the Vice President of Engineering and lead the mechanical design of a significant space mechanisms or space robotics hardware development project.

Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system development. Familiarity with and prior experience in the space, agriculture, construction, or mining industry are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive hardware development from concept development through the design, analysis, prototype, test, and manufacturing phases. This role will focus on development of space mechanisms or space robotics.
  • Design mechanisms, actuators, linkages, and robotic systems for mobility and excavation operations in space (digging, conveying, handling, abrasion management).
  • Engineer hardware that survives surface environments: dust abrasion, thermal cycling, shock/vibration, and off-nominal loading.
  • Build and test the systems you design; full end-to-end responsibility.
  • Develop requirements with systems, robotics, thermal, and geological science teammates.
  • Create drawing packages, 3D models, GD&T, and interface definitions. Conduct structural FEM analysis and performance estimation (torque, power, life).
  • Lead design reviews and support qualification and environmental testing.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
  • 5+ years in mechanical systems development (preferably robotics, automation, mining equipment, or electromechanical systems).
  • 3+ years of professional CAD experience (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, etc.).
  • 3+ years of structural FEA experience (ANSYS, FEMAP, etc.).
  • Strong GD&T skills and experience releasing manufacturing drawings.
  • Hands-on experience building, assembling, and debugging hardware.
  • Experience with motion control systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience designing for abrasive, dusty, or high-wear environments (mining equipment, construction machinery, agriculture machinery, or similar).
  • Experience on a planetary or in-space mission, especially involving surface operations.
  • Knowledge of mining engineering or planetary geology.
  • Experience designing and testing cryogenic fluid systems, including pumps, heat exchangers, condensers and phase separators.
  • Project leadership experience in space, robotics, industrial, or heavy-equipment environments.

Compensation range for on site WA state employees is:

Target Levels: 

Level 2 Range: $96,700 - $145,100

Level 3 Range: $120,900 - $181,300

We will consider candidates with a wide variety of experience levels for this position. Your actual level and base salary will be decided based on your specific experience and skill level.
